BBC names anchor for royal wedding

Broadcaster Huw Edwards has been confirmed as the anchor for BBC coverage of next year's royal wedding.

He will front the coverage on TV and radio when Prince William marries Kate Middleton on April 29 at Westminster Abbey.

The news presenter had been hotly tipped as the favourite to lead the BBC broadcasts.

Edwards said: "I am delighted with the news and consider it a great honour to play a part in what I am sure will be a huge national celebration."

He has led coverage for a number of major state occasions including the D-Day 60th anniversary in 2004 and the Pope's visit earlier this year.

Edwards has also handled the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and this year's Commonwealth Games.

Question Time host David Dimbleby had for many years been the main presenter for state occasions, following in the footsteps of his late father Richard.
