Classic World Cup matches of yesteryear are to be screened in full by the BBC in the run-up to this summer’s competition in Rio De Janeiro.
Crucial games such as the 1966 World Cup final, the “hand of God” match in which Diego Maradona sent England crashing out in 1986, and the 1990 disappointment which left Paul Gascoigne in tears are among the list.
They will be screened “as-live” on the BBC’s digital services with running text commentary and guest contributions from figures such as Gary Lineker.
The BBC World Cup Rewind service will launch from May 30 for PCs, tablets and mobile phones at bbc.co.uk/worldcup or through the BBC Sport app.
The matches include:
England v West Germany, 1966 final (to be shown on May 30 at noon);
Scotland v The Netherlands, 1978 group match (May 31, 3pm);
England v Argentina, 1986 quarter-final (June 4, noon);
England v Germany, 1990 semi-final (June 7, 3pm);
Spain v Northern Ireland, 1982 group match (June 8, 3pm).
