Beer gardening: New bar has allotments produce on menu

A new bar is reaping the rewards of a ground-breaking approach to gastronomy.

Kith and Kin, in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, opens tonight with a menu containing ingredients grown around the corner.

Staff teamed up with the local allotments association to harvest fruit and vegetables for its food and drink.

Bosses claim it is the first venue of its type in the country to be using what it calls “super locally sourced” ingredients.

Bar manager Lauren Gill said: “Other places say they use locally sourced produce, but that can mean using stuff that’s miles away. Having done some research we think we’re the only place around that’s using super local produce that’s grown literally seconds from our doorstep.”

Among the first items on the menu to be made with produce from the allotment will be apple martinis and courgette soup.

And, although the growers won’t be paid for their supplies, the bar – whose name comes from the archaic term for “friends and family” – is pledging to let them dine for free.

Miss Gill added: “Our concept is about being a home from home. We want to have a real sense of community.”
