Bees find new home at business park in city

A BUSINESS park in Bradford will permanently house four hives to help educate local people about bees.

Initially, two of the hives will house 50,000 European honey bees each, with the other two remaining empty until the existing bees reproduce and need to be divided into separate swarms. They will be situated in a specially created bee-friendly area that boasts shrubs, flowers and a pond full of various water plants, all of which bees need to survive.

Bradford Beekeepers Association has been looking for a permanent base for some time and has chosen Inspire Bradford Business Park, close to Eccleshill Community Hospital, as its new base.

The association will use the new base as a training and education centre, providing local people with knowledge about the importance of bees and how to keep them.

Bill Cadmore, chair of Bradford Beekeepers Association, said: “We are delighted to be establishing a permanent base at Inspire Bradford Business Park.

“The area around the business park is great for bees and all the trees, bushes and plants that are being planted throughout the business park have been selected because they are good for bees.”

Established eighteen months ago, the association is the first of its kind in the city and currently has sixty four members. It provides support, advice and training to people who either keep, or want to keep bees. They can be contacted via their website: www.bfdbka.org.uk
