Bellringers gather for anniversary

The Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers marked the 125th anniversary of the death of their first president at the weekend.

Bellringers from across the region, including the associations's five surviving presidents, gathered at Ilkley Parish Church for a service in memory of Jasper Whitfield Snowdon.

Current president Barrie Dove said: "He wrote some of the early ringing text books so he was very well respected throughout the whole of Great Britain."

Mr Snowdon, who lived in Ilkley, founded the association 135 years ago in 1875.

He died 10 years later of typhoid, aged just 42. The association now has around 1,900 members.
