Benefit concert for village church

Kate Stables, who was a pupil at Burnsall Primary School and now plays for the Opera North Orchestra, is to return to the village on September 29 as part of the New World Ensemble (NWE).

The recently formed quartet, who all play for Opera North, will treat an audience at St Wilfrid’s Church in Burnsall to an informal evening of music and conversation as they perform some of the most popular music in their repertoire including Haydn’s “Fifth”, Mendelssohn’s “A major Quartet” and Dvorak’s “American”.

Andy Long, associate leader of the acclaimed Opera North Orchestra and the artistic director of the NWE, will introduce the music.

The evening, which starts at 7.30pm, will raise money for St Wilfrid’s Fabric Fund to maintain the structure of the Grade I listed building.

The church, which dates back to Norman times, needs roof repairs and work done to rectify a problem with damp which is estimated to cost tens of thousands of pounds. It is thought that part of the chancel roof will have to be removed, be properly insulated and timbered and the slates repaired and replaced.
