Berwick plots a panto success

Perennial pantomime dame Berwick Kaler is reprising his favourite role in York Theatre Royal’s Christmas production Aladdin and the Twankeys.

It is Mr Kaler’s fourth time playing Widow Twankey in a career that has seen him take to the stage in 41 pantomimes, 35 of them at York – earning him a claim to the title of Britain’s longest-serving dame.

The actor, who also wrote and directed the production, said: “As always it will have all the makings of a traditional family panto, with plenty of lunacy and madness. The really exciting thing this year is we have a script and a plot.”

Joining him will be Martin Barrass, who has spent most of the year appearing in the West End production of One Man, Two Guvnors, Suzy Cooper, Sian Howard, AJ Powell, Jonathan Race and Alexander Braatz.
