Bettison
under fire for match
attendance

HILLSBOROUGH campaigners have hit out after pictures emerged of former West Yorkshire Police chief constable Sir Norman Bettison attending a match with Wolverhampton Wanderers chairman Steve Morgan.

The photographs taken at Wolves’ match at Bradford City on Saturday caused controversy on the social networking site Twitter yesterday – as Mr Morgan is a lifelong Liverpool fan who once tried to buy the club.

Sir Norman stepped down last year and is facing an Independent Police Complaints Commission inquiry over his alleged role in the cover-up of mistakes made during the 1989 disaster at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground in which 96 Liverpool fans died. He was a chief inspector with South Yorkshire Police at the time.

A statement from Wolves yesterday confirmed Sir Norman had attended the match at Valley Parade, leading Hillsborough campaigners to voice their disappointment.

Hillsborough Family Support Group chair Margaret Aspinall said: “How can anyone ever invite him to a football club when the concerns about what happened after Hillsborough are so well-known? It beggars belief.”

A statement on Wolves website yesterday said: “The club has been contacted by many fans regarding some tweets this morning referring to a big Wolves story, which was about to break.

“The story is that Sir Norman Bettison attended the Bradford City away game in the same way he has attended many Wolves games in the past.

Steve Morgan and Sir Norman Bettison have known each other for many years.

“Everyone connected with the club has the utmost sympathy and respect for the victims of Hillsborough and their families, and today’s story should in no way detract from those heartfelt sentiments.“
