Bid to cut council numbers backed

THE Boundary Commission will decide if the number of elected members on a North Yorkshire council should be dramatically scaled back after councillors approved the cost-cutting measure.

The Yorkshire Post revealed earlier this month that Hambleton District Council’s cabinet had recommended that the numbers are cut from 44 to 28.

The proposed move to slash the number of elected members almost in half is expected to save about £75,000 a year.

A full council meeting has now backed the plans and the proposals will be sent to the Boundary Commission which will make the final judgement.

Council leader Neville Huxtable said: “We believe 28 councillors will provide an efficient and effective authority.

“It will be modern and streamlined and fit for the functions we now have to perform.”

Councillors agreed 12 months go to ask the Boundary Commission to undertake a review of the size of the Hambleton authority. Since then a working party - made up of members of all parties - has explored the possible make-up of the authority, sought views from parish councils and discussed the plans with the commission.
