Bid for £780,000 lottery support to improve canal

HELP is being sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund to improve facilities for visitors to the Rochdale Canal.

Members of Calderdale Council will discuss on June 6 a proposal to support a bid for £780,000 from the fund.

The bid is being submitted by Pennine Prospects with support from The Waterways Trust, which owns the Rochdale Canal.

The council is being asked to give technical support, with officers working to help put the bid together.

The money would be used to upgrade displays at the Canal Visitor Centre in Hebden Bridge, install interpretation and signage at key points along the Calder- dale length of the canal, improve access to the canal and provide more educational and promotional opportunities.

The canal was officially opened in 1804 and became the main highway of commerce between Yorkshire and Lancashire.
