Big launch planned for city’s showcase park

A LAUNCH date was set yesterday for Bradford’s delayed city centre park.

The park is due to open to the public in January when most of the construction work is expected to be completed, and yesterday it was announced a launch event had been pencilled in for Saturday, March 24.

Bradford Council said the event would be a celebration to show off the park, building to a night-time finale. Full details of the free event will be announced soon.

The site will be used as a focal point for national events, including the Olympic Games, as well as local diary dates, such as the Lord Mayor’s Parade and St George’s Day commemorations.

Coun David Green, the council’s executive member for regeneration and economy, said: “The official launch event promises to be a great day at City Park.

“Construction work is due to end in January and the park will open at that point but the event in March gives us the chance to officially launch it with a bang and showcase the fountains, artworks and space as a whole,” Coun Green added.

City Park contains a 4,000sq ft mirror pool and 100 fountains, including 40 low-powered fountains for children’s enjoyment.

It features a 100ft central fountain, the tallest in any UK city, and has been designed to create a vibrant public space for people of all ages to enjoy with areas for rest, relaxation and play.
