Big names on their bikes for city race event

A MAJOR cycling tournament, which is expected to attract some of the biggest names in the sport, is forecast to bring thousands of extra visitors to York in a major tourism boost for the city.

Organised by the Cycling City York project, in partnership with Clifton Cycling Club and British Cycling, a day-long series of races for professional riders to amateurs is being staged on Sunday, July 25.

Visit York's chief executive, Gillian Cruddas, said: "York is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best cities for cycling in the UK and we are second only to Cambridge in terms of numbers of residents who cycle per population.

"Events such as this will help us to raise York's profile nationally and internationally as a superb place to cycle and enjoy the great outdoors."

Organisers said that while competitors have yet to be confirmed, they are hoping to attract some major names as the event will be the biggest race happening in the UK that weekend.
