Big screen appeal for football fans

A BRADFORD councillor has urged the council to rethink its decision not to provide a big screen for football fans to watch the World Cup.

Conservative Group Leader Coun Anne Hawkesworth said that it would be a "shame" if the matches were not screened in the city centre, arguing that local football fans would "miss out".

Neighbouring cities have already announced provisions for their residents to watch the matches live.

Bradford Council announced that the permanent big screen in Centenary Square could not be used because of the nearby City Park construction works.

Coun Hawkesworth said: "I fully understand the reasons behind not showing the live matches on the normal big screen, as the council has done during previous tournaments.

"But I think we must at least examine what possibilities exist for hiring a screen which could then be set up on the other side of Centenary Square where there is still plenty of space and where there are no obvious health and safety risks to spectators."

Last month, Leeds Council bosses confirmed all of England's games at the tournament will be shown live on a giant screen in the city's Millennium Square.
