Bikers help to repair Roman road

OFF-ROAD bikers have helped silence their critics by repairing a section of Roman road in the Yorkshire Dales.

More than 20 members of the Teesside and North Yorkshire Trail Riders Fellowship helped National Park Authority rangers repair the surface of the track near Hawes after it suffered frost damage during last winter’s big freeze.

The road – which linked Ingleton to the Roman fort at Bainbridge –had become rutted and difficult to use.

The riders helped lay 120 tons of aggregate and then compacted the surface.

National Park Authority area ranger Matt Neale said: “Trail motorcyclists have received a lot of negative press over the last few years, but now some responsible riders have stepped forward to help us repair routes that they regularly ride.”

Meanwhile 80 students from Settle College have been helping to maintain the Settle and Giggleswick riverside following a major improvement programme in 2007.

They removed, dismantled, sanded and varnished three interpretation boards and removed graffiti from benches that were installed during 2009.
