Birdwatchers get temporary access to peregrine paradise

PEREGRINE falcons nesting on the cliffs below Scarborough Castle are set to be one of the seaside town’s star attractions this summer.

A new viewpoint is being set up by RSPB conservation officers and Scarborough Council from tomorrow for the next three months.

They say it will allow enthusiasts to watch the spectacular birds of prey as they swoop off the sea cliffs at speeds as fast as 200mph and raise their young.

The peregrines have been resident at the site for at least six years, raising three or four chicks every 12 months.

Because of the stunning setting and close proximity to the birds, it is hoped the viewpoint will be one of the best in the country.

Martin Watherston, Scarborough Council’s outdoor leisure manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to support this special viewpoint in Scarborough and making the most of the diversity this stretch of coastline has to offer.

“While it will have obvious appeal for enthusiasts, we also hope that many other visitors and local residents will take the opportunity to see such wonderful birds of prey in their natural habitat.”

The viewpoint is located on Marine Drive and is staffed every Thursday to Sunday by experts with powerful telescopes and binoculars.
