Birdwatchers introduce families to local wildlife

THE Royal Society for the Protection of Bird is inviting families in the East Riding to get closer to the wildlife on their doorsteps through a series of activities in Filey this summer.

The RSPB is urging people to experience “everything that chirps, crawls, squeaks and soars” in the resort by joining members on nature walks through Filey Country Park.

Each Thursday next month, RSPB volunteers will be showing visitors everything from seabirds and sand martins, to butterflies and toads that live in the park, with the walks taking place between 10.30am and 1.30pm, weather permitting.

The Society is also running two special “life on the edge” walks, offering the chance to explore inter-tidal wildlife including hermit crabs, velvet swimming crabs and sea slugs. These will be held on Friday August 12 from 9.30am and the following Friday at 1pm.

Carolyn Jarvis, the RSPB’s people engagement manager for northern England, said: “Our nature walks and activities in Filey are a great way for family to get outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of the local area over the summer holidays.

“I would recommend them to anyone who wants a healthy, free, fun, family day out.”

The meeting point for all walks is near the country park café. Places are limited and allocated on a first-come basis.

Anyone wanting to take part should be dressed fro changeable weather and terrain.

Volunteers will also be on Filey promenade each weekend – except Saturday August 20 – until the end of the month to talk about local wildlife.
