Black ice warning for drivers

More than 200 North Yorkshire schools were closed yesterday as the Arctic conditions continued to cause chaos on the roads.

North Yorkshire Police said although no one had been hurt there had been 10 "damage only" crashes in the morning and motorists were warned not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Highways chiefs were concerned that snow drifts were worsening conditions on roads across the Yorkshire Wolds, North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales. Officers said most major routes were passable with care. However, the A169 between Pickering and Whitby was closed.

A severe weather warning remained in place, with forecasters predicting that temperatures could plunge to minus 13C overnight, causing to widespread black ice.

York Council leaders met for the third time in 24 hours to review their performance in keeping road and foot traffic moving and pedestrians safe following criticism of their gritting strategy last winter.

A police spokesman warned drivers to take extra care and "be mindful of black ice" as road surfaces can look wet while being like skating rinks.

Police also said they would crack down on youths throwing snowballs after several incidents in Thirsk.
