Black Swan spreads its wings with triple honour from AA

A COUNTRY pub which was saved from closure by a farming family has become the only one in Yorkshire to be awarded three AA Rosettes.

The Black Swan at Oldstead, near Byland Abbey in the

North York Moors, has been given the honour for its menu, which is heavily reliant on local produce.

The pub is owned and run by the Banks family, who have lived and farmed in the village for generations.

The Black Swan was bought by Anne and Tom Banks in 2006 to save it from closure, as the couple also looked to provide a business for their two sons, James and Tommy.

James manages the front of house and Tommy works as a chef in the kitchen under head chef Adam Jackson. Their parents manage the business as well as running a farm at Oldstead Grange.

The Black Swan has become the only pub in the region to be given three AA Rosettes, and joins other renowned restaurants with the award including Swinton Park at Masham and The Box Tree in Ilkley.

Mrs Banks said: "It is very rare to find a pub with food at this level, and we are delighted to be one of only a handful in the country."

AA inspectors give a ranking of between one and five Rosettes. About 10 per cent of restaurants nationally have been given at least one Rosette.
