Blackpool's rise inspires stadium plea

THE ascent of Blackpool into football's Premier League has been highlighted in the campaign to create a long-awaited community stadium in York.

York City's ambition of clawing a way out of the Blue Square Premier back into the football league was shattered when the team lost to Oxford United at the Wembley play-off final earlier this month.

But the leader of York Council's Labour group, Coun James Alexander, says a community stadium is vital to ensure success.

He said: "Blackpool's achievements are incredible for a town of only 140,000 people, and it just shows what is possible with the right vision and support."

He added: "Labour in York believes that the ambition of the club should not simply be about getting into the football league, but aiming even higher and seeking to emulate teams like Blackpool in their current level of success."
