Blast-hit swimming pools to reopen

TWO swimming pools at a landmark £19m leisure centre will open today, three weeks after they were rocked by an explosion.

The Pods in Scunthorpe opened on schedule last Monday, but its eight-lane, 25-metre swimming pool and smaller training pool have yet to be used after a blast caused by a build-up of pressure in the pool filtration system injured three workmen.

North Lincolnshire Council is now encouraging residents to make a splash after declaring the facilities safe to use.

Deputy council leader John Briggs said: “I’m very pleased that The Pods will be fully open to the public from Monday, when people will be able to use the swimming pool in addition to the facilities that are already open.

“There were queues from before 7am on Monday, when the dry-side opened, and it’s been busy ever since. We’ve received some very positive comments about the facilities and I’m really pleased that people like it.”

The Ashby Road centre also features a split-level gym, a six-court sports hall, two exercise studios, a sauna, spa bath and steam room, a café with seating across two floors, and an outdoor terrace.
