Blaze club chiefs plan £5m basement venue

NIGHTCLUB bosses who saw their previous building burn to the ground have unveiled plans for a new venue underneath a multi-storey car park.

Three years ago, what was left of Gatecrasher in Arundel Street, Sheffield, was flattened following a devastating fire and owners promised to rebuild it.

But they have now revealed a scheme to convert the basement of one of the city’s newest multi-storey car parks into a new nightclub, at a cost of 5m.

Gatecrasher managing director Simon Raine said plans had been drawn up for the car park in Charles Street, which is locally known as the “cheese grater”.

He added: “We were devastated at the loss of the Sheffield club in 2007 and have been searching tirelessly for a location so we can return.

“What has been heartening is all the support we’ve had from the city, we get emails daily asking when we are returning to Sheffield and now it is finally a reality.”

Plans have been submitted to Sheffield Council for the development, which show a 30,000 sq ft, 2000-capacity “hyper club”. Gatecrasher said the club could create 200 jobs.

If approved, the plans would see the car park’s basement transformed into four different club rooms, and a main auditorium which will host both DJs and live music events.

Mr Raine added: “We are currently in close consultation with the relevant authorities to ensure our policies around noise, anti-social behaviour and dispersal satisfy everyone.”
