Blaze inquiry at damaged workshop

FIREFIGHTERS remained on standby yesterday after a blaze tore through a large workshop and warehouse in Scunthorpe.

Over 30 firefighters battled the fire at Elliott Workspace, on Scotter Road, overnight on Wednesday, as temperatures plunged to well below zero.

Hoses that weren’t being used froze solid in the arctic conditions.

A crew remained at the scene yesterday while unmanned water hoses cooled two acetylene gas cylinders. An investigation began into the cause of the fire which began at 4.37pm on Wednesday.

At the height of the fire, crews from Scunthorpe, Winterton, Kirton Lindsey, Barton, Hull West and Immingham were called to the scene, using a hydraulic aerial platform to tackle the blaze in the 600 metre square building.
