Blaze under investigation

The incident at D&S Supersave, in Richard Road, Smithies, started early yesterday morning.

The fire spread throughout the ground and first floors, and into the roof. A man, woman and girl who lived in the building all escaped without injury, but a woman who lived in an adjoining semi-detached house had to be given treatment for minor smoke inhalation.

Firefighters from stations across Barnsley were called to the incident at 3.30am. Incident commander Neil Baugh said: "The crews worked extremely well to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining property."
