Blessed day for baby Maria as Pope greets masses

Plucked from the crowd and held up to the beaming pontiff, baby Maria Tyszczak was blessed and kissed by Pope Benedict XVI yesterday as her family joined tens of thousands of worshippers for an open-air mass in Glasgow.

Making the first papal state visit to the UK, the Pope arrived in Edinburgh yesterday for his four-day trip where he told thousands of pilgrims the UK has been a "force for good".

Addressing an audience of more than 60,000, he warned about "aggressive forms of secularism" and urged the nation not to lose its traditional values as it "strives to be a modern and multicultural society". Earlier the Pope was officially welcomed by the Queen at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

A spokesman for the Catholic Church hailed the first day as a "success" and said the pontiff was "overwhelmed" by the welcome he received. The Pope in Britain: Pages 4&5
