When he went outside the man assaulted the 53-year-old with a weapon, leaving his skull severely fractured. Mr Brown's partner Julia Greenwood took the photos of his horrific injuries as he lay in hospital which have now been released in the hope that they will lead to information to identify his attacker.

Surgeons operated on Mr Brown after the attack but he will have to undergo further surgery.

Police have already put out CCTV picture of a red car officers would like to trace and an electronic image of a man detectives want to speak to in connection with the assault.

He was aged 19 to 25, with mousey hair wearing a grey hoodie at the time of the attack, which happened between 9.05pm and 9.20pm on Thursday July 8.
