Blossoming talent

LANDSCAPE gardeners will take part in a contest which is being staged for the first time at the Great Yorkshire Show that will see the winners compete against horticultural experts from across the globe.

The York-based Askham Bryan College is the training centre for 12 landscape gardeners whose sights are set on being the two chosen as “Team UK” for the 2013 WorldSkills competition. The 12 competitors have been chosen from more than 100 possible contenders from across the country. The Great Yorkshire Show, which runs in Harrogate from July 10 until 12 July, will feature the contest’s first heat when, over the three days, six gardens plus a “show garden” will be created – against the clock and under the watchful eye of a judging panel. The winners will then head to Leipzig in Germany where the WorldSkills final takes place in July next year.
