Blowing his own trumpet

A Yorkshire schoolboy can be forgiven for blowing his own trumpet after securing a place to study at a prestigious music college next year.

Charles Saunders, has been awarded a music exhibition to Radley College, in Oxfordshire, after impressing a five-strong audition panel.

The 12-year-old has earned his place at the private boarding school with his trumpet rendition of La Cucaracha, a South American traditional Rumba.

Charles, who goes to Woodleigh School in Langton, near Malton, said: "I really enjoyed having the chance to do some improvisation with the head of music during my audition and I'm looking forward to all the opportunities this award opens up for me next year."

However the work does not stop there for Charles as he now has to complete both an academic scholarship exam and a sports and music all-rounder assessment later this month.

Woodleigh's headmaster, Michael England said: "Charles has worked very hard to reach such a high standard; from playing in the school band and York RI Golden Rail Band to sounding the Last Post at the parish Remembrance service.

"His inspiration is Louis Armstrong and I'm sure this diversity strengthened his claim on this accolade."
