Blue boxes lead green drive for recycling in 50,000 households

AROUND 50,000 households in Sheffield are now set to receive blue recycling boxes as the second phase of the city's new household recycling service is rolled out.

Boxes and information packs are being delivered to people living in Stannington, Fulwood, Shirecliffe, Sharrow, Crookes and Crosspool.

People in those areas will now use the new boxes for paper and card, and use their existing blue bin for glass, cans and plastic bottles.

Sheffield Council's Cabinet member for climate change, Andrew Sangar, said: "This is the second of the four phases to be delivered across the city and, by the end of the year, people right across Sheffield will have more opportunities to recycle.

"Local people told us that they wanted to recycle more, so that is what we have delivered."

After the first phase of the scheme was rolled out in the northern part of the city in March, there were numerous complaints that the blue boxes containing paper were too heavy to lift, especially if the paper became wet.

As a result, lids will now be delivered along with the boxes.

Coun Sangar added: "We have learned from feedback following the first round of deliveries and provided waterproof 'hats' for the boxes to keep the paper and card dry.

"This new service will allow Sheffielders to play their part in achieving our key aims of helping more householders to recycle, increasing Sheffield's recycling rate and minimising the amount sent to landfill."
