Blunkett to attend park grand reopening

A REVAMPED boating lake and park is set to be officially opened in Sheffield today, at an event which is set to attract guests including former Home Secretary David Blunkett.

The Ripples on the Pond project at Firth Park has regenerated the old boating lake and surrounding area into what the council describes as an “exciting and vibrant green space.”

The project has included the creation of a wetland area fed by a natural spring in the park and a decking area for people to watch wildlife.

There is now an area for open-air events to be held; a boulder for climbing; new footpaths and new seats.

Coun Sylvia Dunkley, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, said: “The Ripples in the Pond project has provided a wonderful new amenity for the Firth Park area.

“The council has enjoyed a successful working relationship with the Park’s Friends group over the last 10 years and this project is evidence of all the hard work they have put in to improve and promote the use of the park.

“Their support has helped to secure funding from a variety of sources to transform the site into a superb multi-use facility for the entire community.”

From 2pm today an event to mark the opening of the park will take place next to the clock tower.

A spokesman for Sheffield Council said: “The site will be officially opened by Coun Joan Barton, who is retiring after 34 years as councillor for the Firth Park Ward.

David Blunkett MP and Coun Dunkley are also honorary guests at the event, which will include music, activities and refreshments.

“The new facility was created by Sheffield Council with support the Friends of Firth Park, the local community and the North East Community Assembly.”

Funding for the regeneration project came from bodies including the Graves Charitable Trust, the BIG Lottery fund and Sheffield Homes.
