Bodies band together to celebrate city in flowers to aid cathedral fund

A JAIL and a ruined castle have been depicted in flowers to raise the profile of a city's cathedral.

The exhibition – Wakefield in Flowers – will help raise money for the city cathedral's 5m redevelopment.

Flowers have been used to depict Wakefield Prison, Nostell Priory, Sandal Castle, Walton Hall and other landmark sites and buildings across the area.

They will go on display in a special free exhibition in Wakefield Cathedral from tomorrow until Monday.

It is the first time that different groups and organisations from the Wakefield area have come together to celebrate the city in flowers. Wakefield In Flowers festival organiser, Joy Parkinson, said: "We wanted to do something that celebrated all different aspects of Wakefield life and realised how many important buildings, parks and organisations we actually have. We thought we could bring the city together in flowers and what better backdrop than the cathedral, right here at the heart of it all."

Dean of Wakefield Jonathan Greener added: "You don't have to venture very far to realise Wakefield is changing.

"Here at the cathedral we are working hard to ensure that this beautiful building also undergoes change so we can brighten the interior and make it more flexible for today's needs."
