Body of elderly man found in river

POLICE believe the body of an elderly man which was recovered from a West Yorkshire river was that of a man who had been reported missing.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service helped to recover the body following the discovery in the River Calder, off Anchor Place, Brighouse, just before 5am yesterday.

Officers had been called to the town less than an hour earlier following a report that an elderly man had gone missing.

A police dog unit and the National Police Air Service helicopter were involved in the search.

It is believed that a walking stick was spotted on the river bank and a body was found in the river nearby close to a weir.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said yesterday: “Police were called to Brighouse at about 4.12am this morning following a report an 86-year-old man had gone missing.

“Officers searched and the body of an elderly man was found in the River Calder off Anchor Place just before 5am. His body was recovered with the assistance of the fire service.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
