Body found in hunt for missing Leeds student

POLICE searching for a 19-year-old student who went missing after a night out recovered a body from a river today.

Matthew Wilcox, a geography student at the University of Leeds, has not been seen for a week.

West Yorkshire Police said Mr Wilcox did not return to his student flat in the Clarence Dock area of Leeds and said his disappearance was "very much out of character".

He was last seen at around 3am last Friday went he left the Mission nightclub in the city centre.

Worried members of his family reported him missing the following day when he did not attend a charity event at his home in the Wickersley area of Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Teams, including an underwater search unit, have scoured areas of Leeds city centre during the past week looking for clues to his whereabouts.

A police spokeswoman said a body was recovered from the River Aire in Leeds city centre shortly before 2pm today.

The spokeswoman said the body had yet to be formally identified.
