Body found in river is that of missing student

Police have confirmed a body found in the River Wharfe yesterday morning is that of missing student Steven Johnson.

Mr Johnson's body was discovered by a member of the public in the river, near Watersole Lane, between Wetherby and Boston Spa.

The Bradford College student, of Clifford, was reported missing by his family on Sunday after failing to return home from a night out in nearby Wetherby.

Police had searched open land in the area and around the banks of the River Wharfe, believing he may have tried to walk home after losing contact with a friend shortly after midnight. The 22-year-old's death is not thought suspicious.

Diane Johnson paid tribute to her son last night in a statement.

"We are all very proud of Steven and you could not wish for a better son, brother and friend. He never brought us any trouble and had a great sense of humour, he was my best friend.

"He was in a happy relationship and was a good boy with so much to look forward to.

"He will be missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to have known him.

"As a family we would also like to thank all those who have thought about us and helped with the search for Steven during the last few days."
