Bogus officials steal from woman aged 82

PEOPLE in Bradford are being warned about bogus officials operating in the area after an 82-year-old woman had money stolen by a man posing as a water board official.

The man called at about 7:30pm on Tuesday on Broadstone

Way, Holmewood, telling his elderly victim he was visiting to check the pipes at the property.

While he had distracted the occupant, it is believed a

second person went into the house and took money from her purse.

Last night Bradford South Det Insp Alan Flynn urged people to be vigilant saying: "Unfortunately, this is a technique which we often see used particularly upon vulnerable and elderly residents

"In this latest incident, the man who turned up at the door was white, around 6ft tall, in his mid twenties with short curly black hair.

"He was also clean shaven, wore dark clothing and spoke with a strong Irish accent.

"If you witnesses this incident or have any information which could assist in our investigations, I would ask that you come forward immediately.

"I would also like to hear from anyone who has received similar visits to let us know as it may help to build a picture of those who are operating in the area.

"Thieves will use all manner of excuses to gain access to your home and your property.

"It is therefore extremely important that people are aware of the simple steps they can take to avoid becoming a victim.

"Don't open the door to anyone you are not expecting to call and if companies call round unannounced, ask the caller to go away and for an appointment to be arranged by letter if you are interested in their services. Never feel under pressure, you are under no obligation to let them in," he added.

Any witnesses or anyone who has any information about the incident on Broadstone Way is asked to contact Bradford South CID on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
