Bomb disposal expert's bravery remembered

The Union flag-draped coffin of Captain Daniel Read, inset left, is carried into Truro Cathedral, Cornwall, for his funeral yesterday.

Mourners paid tribute to the bomb disposal officer killed in Afghanistan just weeks after returning to the front following an injury in a previous explosion. Major Kier Head, the regiment’s acting commanding officer, told mourners: “You can pick up from that the remarkable bravery of the man.” Captain Read, 31, from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, was killed in a bomb blast in Musa Qaleh, northern Helmand, on January 11.
