Sir Roger, who died on Tuesday at 89, starred as the secret agent in seven 007 movies between 1973 and 1985.

His predecessor, Sir Sean Connery, who created the role on screen, said he would “miss” Sir Roger, with whom he enjoyed a long friendship “filled with jokes and laughter”.

The present James Bond, actor Daniel Craig, invoked one of Sir Roger’s outings in the role, writing: “Nobody Does It Better - love Daniel.”

The Irish actor, Pierce Brosnan, who like Craig has starred as Bond four times, described Sir Roger as “magnificent”, as he shared a photograph of the pair together.

He wrote: “It is indeed with a heavy heart that I hear the news of your passing this morning.
