Book for child patients wins top medical award

A CHILDREN'S book by a Yorkshire physiotherapist on the mysteries of a painful condition has won a top award.

Jacquelyne Todd, physiotherapist consultant in lymphoedema, based at Wharfedale Hospital in Otley, near Leeds, has received requests from around the world for copies of the Big Book of Lymphoedema since it was published last year.

The condition causes painful chronic swelling.

It scooped the patient information award special prize for children in the the British Medical Association's Book Awards for 2010.

Dr Todd was accompanied to the prize-giving in London by Katie Taylor, whose fund-raising efforts made the book possible.

It was inspired by her son George, one of the first children to be treated by the lymphoedema service in Leeds in 2005 with sudden swelling in both his legs. At the time, no information about the condition for children was available.
