A NEW puzzle book produced by a Sheffield University academic is designed to be more than just fun.

The Rough Guide of Brain Training, by psychologist Dr Tom Stafford, has been produced to give the reader a “thorough mental workout” while also answering scientific questions about how brain training works.

Written in conjunction with puzzle author Dr Gareth Moore, the book contains 100 days worth of puzzles designed to exercise the mind.

Dr Stafford said: “Research shows that we can all train ourselves to be sharper, faster and healthier. The important thing for mental fitness is to keep ourselves challenged, and brain training puzzles are one way of doing this.

“It is never too late to start. The book has tips on how to exercise every part of your mind, and many different types of puzzle so that you can find out some of your strengths and weaknesses.”

This book, which is the first interactive Rough Guide, allows the reader to play along, providing puzzles to exercise their mind and discussing the scientific evidence behind the “brain training” headlines.

There are 500 puzzles, including favourites such as sudoku and kakuro. In addition to the puzzles, the book covers topics such as the structure and evolution of the brain, what makes a genius and how to give yourself the best chance of having a healthy brain in old age.
