Bottling plant on quarry site rejected

COUNTRYSIDE campaigners have claimed victory after planning chiefs threw out an application for a mineral water bottling factory on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

Pressure group Friends of the Peak District joined residents and other groups including the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to object to the plans at Cowdale Quarry, near Buxton.

In all, High Peak Borough Council, which refused the application, received nearly 300 letters against the application. Objectors said the quarry had not been worked since the 1950s and argued the site had reverted back to nature.

John King, planning officer at Friends of the Peak District, said: "Cowdale is a beautiful landscape in its own right. It's also part of the buffer zone between the Peak Park and Buxton and crucial for stopping industrial sprawl.

"With such a strong refusal, we're hoping that developers have got the message and won't waste their time with an appeal."
