Bounty of trout set to lure anglers to Nidderdale

An influx of anglers is expected at a North Yorkshire beauty spot to enjoy vastly replenished fish stocks.

About 6,500 rainbow trout - weighing 10,000lbs - will be introduced to Yorkshire Water’s fishery in the picturesque Washburn Valley near Harrogate during the new fishing season, up until November.

The fishery includes Fewston, Swinsty and Thruscross reservoirs and is set in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Many anglers consider the rainbow trout the hardest-fighting trout species. The largest recorded trout catch at Washburn came in 2006 when a 14lb rainbow specimen was landed.

Colin Winterburn, ground-keeper for the Washburn Valley reservoirs, said: “Anglers love the fishery because it offers exceptionally high quality trout fishing in a stunning rural and peaceful setting.

“As we introduce the 10,000lb of fish to our waters over the next eight months, anglers can look forward to a fish frenzy and reeling in some great catches.”

A fishing platform is available adjacent to Swinsty reservoir when the fishery opens for the new season on March 25.
