Boy charged over death of surgeon

Anthony Owen, 68, was found by two people lying next to his white Honda Civic in affluent Hale Village on the evening of March 11.

He died from severe head injuries in hospital six days later.

A 16-year-old boy was yesterday charged with Mr Owen’s manslaughter.

He is due to appear before magistrates today.

Two other teenagers, aged 14 and 17, have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Mr Owen’s family last night praised the “high moral values and exacting standards” of the semi-retired surgeon who dedicated his life to saving others and who had worked as a consultant surgeon at several hospitals, including Wharfedale Hospital at Otley, near Leeds

They said: “We remember him as a man deeply committed to his family and his profession.

“He was one with high moral values and exacting standards who demanded the best of himself and of others around him.

“Anthony had many friends who he supported and helped and he will be sadly missed.”
