Boy in hospital after play area dog attack

CHILDREN ran off in terror after a dog escaped from a yard and attacked an 11-year-old boy in a play area.

The victim was playing in Parsons Street, Keighley, at 2.20pm on Tuesday when he was mauled by a cross breed bull terrier.

An eye witness said: "Three men tried to get the dog off. The dog only let go after ripping off the boy's calf muscle.''

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The boy received a serious bite wound to his right leg and was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary where he is being treated.

"The animal suspected of causing the injury, a cross breed dog, has been recovered by council dog wardens and has been taken to kennels.

"The matter is being investigated by the Keighley neighbourhood policing team.''

The boy, who has not been named, lives on Back Grouse Street and is recovering in hospital. It is understood that although it is a serious wound he is not expected to lose his leg or mobility. Police are trying to trace the dog's owner.

Bradford Council's environmental health manager Jim Aveyard said: "We are holding the dog on behalf of the police to see if the owner comes forward to reclaim it."
