Boy takes first steps after life-saving surgery

A SCHOOLBOY who suffered devastating injuries when he was knocked down by a car on Sheffield’s Manor estate two months ago is learning to walk again.

Mitchell Mason was rushed to intensive care following the accident and underwent life-saving surgery, which involved having part of his skull removed.

The nine-year-old is also set to have a metal plate fitted in his skull this week.

His mother Leasa Ward said: “The doctors can’t tell us exactly what the rate of recovery will be, because with head injuries it is different for everyone.”

She added: “It could take a long time, but they now expect him to make a good recovery.”

Mitchell was knocked down near his home, at a spot where five roads meet beside a park.
