Boyfriend charged with Crete murder

A British man has been charged with the murder of his West Yorkshire girlfriend who died in hospital in Crete on Monday after suffering fatal internal injuries.

Doctors on the Greek island said Chelsea Hyndman, 21, from Castleford, suffered ruptured internal organs caused by physical violence.

Luke Walker, 22, of Brierley Hill, West Midlands, appeared before a court in the island's Heraklion, yesterday where he was formally charged with murder and remanded in custody.

His lawyer George Koundourakis said he hoped Walker would be granted bail.

"He is in prison now but we are going to file an appeal for bail next week. It is too early to say when the trial will be."

It was originally thought Walker would face a lesser charge of causing fatal bodily injury.

Ms Hyndman's mother has described her daughter as "full of life" and a "perfect daughter".

Heather Hyndman issued a statement through police which said the family were devastated by her death.

"The last time we saw her was when she set off for Greece with her friends embarking on a new adventure in her life.

"Chelsea was full of life, very outgoing and a perfect daughter. We have lost not just a daughter but a best friend."

Ms Hyndman was a former pupil of Castleford High School and hundreds of friends have paid tribute to her on social networking website Facebook. Her mother said she left a younger sister, Mia, six, whom she treated like her own daughter.

Ms Hyndman died a day after she was admitted to hospital in Heraklion with severe abdominal pain.

She was transferred to the Venizelio hospital where she underwent an emergency operation but died in the intensive care unit.

It is understood Ms Hyndman and Walker intended to spend the summer working on Crete.
