Bra appeal in search for charity funds uplift

STAFF at Marks & Spencer in Hull are hoping to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer by collecting enough bras to stretch across the entire length of the Humber Bridge.

The store's fundraising team is inviting customers to hand in their old and unwanted bras during Breast Cancer Awareness this month.

Customers can also make donations to Breakthrough Breast Cancer in store, and those contributing 1 or more will be entered into a prize draw.

Food section manager Sharon Blagdon said: "In order to stretch the 1,410-metre distance of the bridge we need to collect a minimum of 2,000 bras, so we're calling on the local community to dig deep into their underwear draws to help us reach our goal."

Customers can donate their bras at the food information points in the M&S Hull and Grimsby stores, in the M&S Simply Food stores at Anlaby or Beverley.

The M&S Hull team will be attempting to stretch the bras across the Humber Bridge on Sunday, October 31.

Following the challenge, all the bras will be donated to Oxfam's Wastesaver recycling plant where they will either be recycled or sent to developing countries.

Ms Blagdon said: "Breakthrough Breast Cancer is the UK's largest and most influential breast cancer charity and thanks to its scientific research, fewer women die of breast cancer today compared with 10 years ago.

"We're hoping that customers will help us to smash our target so we can reach our goal and raise a significant amount of money and awareness to ensure the charity can continue with its fantastic work."

M&S Hull is looking for local businesses and organisations to donate prizes to the prize draw.
