Bradford Council blamed for tourist spot sewage

The household sewage, which also included waste from kitchens and domestic appliances, had been going into Bridgehouse Beck which feeds into the River Worth at Haworth.

The waste originated from homes and from Haworth Medical Practice.

Yorkshire Water, which said it does not have responsibility for rectifying the problem, has worked to stop the sewage going into the waterway through a culvert, which is the responsibility of Bradford Council.

It has also emerged that waste from two pubs, a cafe and a bed and breakfast on Main Street has been ending up in the river too.

Resident Neil Tiplady, of Bridgehouse Lane, Haworth, said a smell has been emanating from two grids on the road and he has seen sewage in Bridgehouse Beck. Mr Tiplady, 50, an electronics engineer, said: “You could see toilet paper in a grid on Bridgehouse Lane.

“I have had the smell on my doorstep the whole time I have lived here since last November.”

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “Yorkshire Water only became aware of this issue after investigating a resident’s complaint and had no involvement in these private connections.

“Rectifying these issues is a matter for the property owner but, as a gesture of goodwill, we have worked to correct part of the problem by re-routing a large proportion of the waste.”

Bradford Council was unavailable for comment.
