Bradford school backed by Cameron rated ‘inadequate’

A SCHOOL has been placed in “special measures” after failing its first inspection.

BBG Academy at Birkenshaw near Bradford was rated ‘inadequate’ for leadership/management and the behaviour of pupils.

Watchdog Ofsted said senior leaders and governors had not taken urgent action to deal with unacceptable behaviour of a small minority of pupils.

Teachers’ expectations of students are “sometimes too low”, “work sometimes lacks challenge” and “low-level disruption” was hindering learning.

The academy opened last year following a campaign to retain a school at the site of Birkenshaw Middle. The campaign was backed by David Cameron ahead of the 2010 General Election.

Sharon Light, chairman of governors, said: “Ofsted confirmed the areas of weakness that we as governors had already identified and are taking action to address.”

She said the academy planned to join the Rodillian Multi-Academy Trust, which runs the Rodillan Academy, Leeds.

Mrs Light was confident the academy “will improve rapidly” in the coming months.

A Government spokesman said: “We are working with the trust with a view to a successful regional sponsor taking over control of the school. The Regional Schools Commissioner will be making a decision in due course.”
