Bradford social worker struck off for failings

A senior social worker has been struck off for misconduct over multiple failings in the care of vulnerable children and families.

The decision by the Health and Care Professions Council follows George Abramson’s dismissal by Bradford Council in December 2012.

A panel of the regulator’s conduct and competence committee ruled he had failed to record or carry out visits in a timely manner and failed to follow up safeguarding concerns.

It heard an investigation was mounted following an incident in September 2011 when a child was admitted to hospital with injuries linked to domestic abuse after he fell down stairs.

Abramson had closed the case three months earlier. Further checks found he had failed to follow plans for the youngster or the family, had never visited the child or follow up concerns reported.

It found evidence he also failed to visit other vulnerable children and families, despite requirements they should be seen every four weeks, or update records.

He raised complaints with managers that his caseload was too high but the panel was told it was only slightly higher than those of colleagues.

Panel chairman Sarah Baalham said: “The proven facts constitute serious misconduct and involve numerous breaches of basic and essential duties of a social worker, which could have a negative impact on vulnerable clients and their families over a period of at least a year.”

He was not present or represented at the hearing in London.
