Bradford’s Westfield shopping mall site is sold

AUSTRALIA’S Westfield Group has signed a deal to develop, design, construct and manage Bradford’s proposed Westfield shopping centre after selling its interest in the site to London-based real estate investment management firm Meyer Bergman.

Westfield said construction on the long-delayed site - the scene of an occupation this summer by Bradford residents angry at the lack of development - in the second half of next year.

Westfield, which previously owned the site, said it would be sold “for a price in line with book value” - believed to be about £200m.

It said in a statement: “On completion of the transaction, Meyer Bergman will become the owner of the Bradford site.

“Meyer Bergman will appoint Westfield to the development, design, construction and leasing roles for the new project.”

The Westfield site has been an eyesore in the centre of Bradford for years, with previous buildings flattened nearly a decade ago on the promise of construction to follow.

The shopping centre was originally planned to open in 2001 but has been beset by delays, first in finding enough tenants, and then by the recession.
