Brain-damage boy awarded £6.4m payout

A little boy who suffered severe brain damage during his delivery at an NHS birth centre has been awarded £6.4m in settlement of his medical negligence claim.

At the High Court in London yesterday, a judge approved the sum to be paid to eight-year-old Theo Kramer who has severe learning difficulties and is unlikely ever to walk.

Mr Justice Tugendhat expressed his "admiration and sympathy" to the boy's parents, Janet Evans and Earnie Kramer, of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, over the "catastrophe that Theo has suffered".

The payment will be made by Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust on behalf of the Edgware Birth Centre in London.

In a statement, the trust offered its "sincere apologies" to Theo and his family. It added: "It is hoped that the settlement, which provides for a regular stream of income throughout Theodore's life, will ensure that he achieves his full potential."
